TrustBallot University Event
Recognising that today's students will evolve into tomorrow's leaders, it is crucial that the importance of democracy be widely understood. As part of TrustBallot's continuous commitment to educate and drive change, we recently hosted a university event aimed at bringing together young students.
Over 100 students from a range of degree courses, including political science, economics and philosophy, joined the event. Our TrustBallot representatives delivered talks on election processes, the power of freedom and participation and together, we encouraged discussions on upholding democratic values around the world.
The historical evolution of electoral systems and their development were presented, alongside the landmark moments and key reforms that have shaped contemporary electoral practices.
In the afternoon, students broke out into separate workshop groups where key questions were posed and discussed, including: what is democracy and why do we need it? How does it encourage development and contribute to a free and just society? Global electoral systems were discussed, with fact sheets on harmful processes provided and explained.
Kate, a political science and international relations student, stated how her ‘eyes have been opened to harmful systems in place in countries such as Uzbekistan, Nicaragua and Syria’ and how she now has a ‘fresh understanding of the importance of free and fair elections – something none of us should take for granted’.
The event concluded by encouraging students to continue exploring the topic and stay informed about democratic principles, as well as the systems that are causing detriment to democracy around the world.
As we continue into 2024, TrustBallot will be continuing to tour universities, schools and institutions, spreading the word on what it means to be democratic, and how we all have an important role to play.
